The National Hair & Beauty Foundation, in 2019, stated that the industry has over 43,000 businesses and generates over £7.5 billion per annum for the UK economy. Also, over 90% of these businesses employ fewer than ten people and over half of people are self-employed, so it’s a sector that welcomes and needs small companies and sole traders.
In early 2021 it was announced that a dedicated personal care services team would be established within the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), recognising both the challenges the sector faced and the significance of the size and scope of the sector to the UK.
