UKHospitality state that the industry in the UK employs over 3.2 million people (10% of employment) and represents 6% of businesses and 5% of GDP.
It is estimated that the UK has 45,000 hotels, 200,000 eating venues and restaurants, over 40,000 pubs and over 900 spas and residential and leisure clubs, so there is a terrific provision to help us enjoy our free time as well as look after us when travelling for business or pleasure.
We have a wealth of tourist attractions too, including amusement parks, aquariums, beaches, castles, festivals, gardens, museums, national parks, piers and more; there’s something for everyone! Wikipedia listed the UK as the tenth most visited destination by international tourists in 2019, so our hospitality industry is used to welcoming visitors from many different places.
The sport and leisure sector, according to a report by Oliver Wyman for Business in Sport and Leisure, generates over £200 billion per annum and features a high number of SMEs (two thirds), making it a significant part of the UK economy.
What this means to you
The entire UK hospitality and leisure sector saw, in the COVID-19 pandemic, the most significant crisis since the second world war.
