Like many industries, the motor vehicle or automotive sector is changing at a rapid pace. In the UK the sale of new petrol and diesel cars will be prohibited from 2030, and while only just over 1% of new vehicles were electric in 2015, by 2020 it had risen to over 10%.
These numbers though, measured in tens or hundreds of thousands, pale in comparison to the total: the Department for Transport and Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency report that there were almost 38 million licensed vehicles in Great Britain in March 2018!
This is an enormous industry upon which most of depend, for a wide range professional, social and family purposes. It is estimated that over 150,000 people in the UK are employed in automotive manufacturing, and over 800,000 in supply, retail and servicing: nearly a million jobs! There’s transportation too: bus and coach, taxi and private hire, and vehicle rental provide a way to get around the 213,000 miles of paved roads in the UK!
